I've found that a Voice Lead is very similar to those used in Judy Crystal-styled songs. Try a different combination of those, since they tend to sound very different in the various ranges.
As well, orchestra hits seem to be rather popular for quick shots outlining chords.
I've noticed that drums and percussion tend to be more dominant in songs, so try to get a strong beat first. The norm seems to be bass drum on the beat, with an open hi-hat hit off it, and quick tom runs to emphasize the ends of phrases.
I'd just say, experiment with different leads. You'll rarely get a good techno sound using "real" instruments.
